Joel E. Turner’s first novel, WILDWOOD EXIT, a noir tale set at the Jersey Shore, was published by Level Best Books in 2025. Amy Rosenberg of the Philadelphia Inquirer called it “a quirky sand-in-your-shoes crime novel with a romantic heart”.
His fiction has appeared in many US and UK journals. Articles he has written about Soul music have been featured on the UK-based Soul Source website, a major platform for news on the Northern Soul scene.
His second novel, BRENDA’S GREEN NOTE, forthcoming from Cynren Press in 2027, is a coming-of-age story about a young woman with synesthesia who harnesses her ability to see sounds as colors to become a key player in the vibrant music scene of the 1960s in Philadelphia.

a) summary and 1st chapter of both your novels;
b) links to published works;
c) the short stories.

I recently finished Chapters 5 & 6 of What is the Chance? and find myself warming up even more to the characters, the story, the settings. Somebody else besides me was wondering about the age of Harold Clarke. I skimmed back over previous chapters. In Chapter 2, referring to his late father’s letter containing the riddle, we read, “He had put it aside for several years, busy with his career at the law firm. Then, a few years after his mother died…” he decided to pursue the matter. I’d decided Harold was past age 30 but perhaps not much older. He notes that the bank manager who assists with the loan for Emily is younger than himself but acts older. Yet his relationships with the young men and women at his sister’s party in Chapter 2 don’t make me feel he’s a lot older than them. My guess is our venerable author has deliberately left this aspect of Harold’s character just that wee bit vague. Sup Turner
